Ghost Jobs on LinkedIn: What to Look For
LinkedIn is the biggest job platform in the world — and unfortunately one of the biggest sources of ghost jobs. Here's how to spot them.
LinkedIn-Specific Ghost Job Signals
1. Posting Age
LinkedIn shows exactly when a job was posted. Look for:
- "Posted 30+ days ago" — high ghost job risk
- "Reposted 2 weeks ago" — the word "Reposted" is a direct ghost job indicator
- "Be an early applicant" on a 2-week-old posting with 500+ applicants — contradiction
2. Applicant Count vs. Age
This is one of the strongest signals:
- 500+ applicants + 45+ days = almost certainly a ghost job or already filled
- Under 25 applicants + less than 7 days = fresh posting, better odds
- "Over 200 applicants" on day 1 = role has been reposted (not new)
3. Easy Apply vs. External Apply
LinkedIn Easy Apply jobs tend to accumulate hundreds of applicants. External apply jobs (redirecting to company site) have fewer applicants and are more likely to be real, active roles.
4. The Job Description Quality
Ghost jobs often have:
- Bullet-point descriptions with no specifics about the team or project
- Copy-pasted descriptions that match similar roles at other companies
- Salary ranges spanning $40-80K (too wide to be meaningful)
- "Responsibilities include but are not limited to" with a generic list
5. Check the Company's LinkedIn Activity
Before applying, check:
- Recent posts — Is the company posting content? Silent companies often aren't hiring
- Headcount trends — LinkedIn shows "employees on LinkedIn" counts; declining = layoffs
- Recent news — Search "[Company name] layoffs 2025" in Google
6. The Recruiter
If a specific recruiter is listed:
- Click their profile — when did they last post? Are they still at the company?
- Look at their recent activity — are they posting hiring-related content?
- Message them directly — a real recruiter hiring for a real role will respond
